Lay Spayer Accreditation Scheme
The Lay Spaying Accreditation Scheme has been developed by the beef cattle industry, including Cattle Australia, Meat and Livestock Australia, and AgForce. This not-for-profit scheme is approved by the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries to support non-veterinarian spayers performing spaying of cattle using the Willis Dropped Ovary Technique (DOT).
In Queensland, the Animal Care and Protection Amendment Bill 2022 mandates that lay spayers must be accredited under this scheme to perform spaying. This scheme ensures a consistent level of competency across spayers, contributing to cattle welfare and professional standards.
Lay (non-vet) spayers require accreditation to perform spaying under the Australian Animal Welfare Standards and Guidelines for Cattle when these standards have been adopted by State Governments
